Main Purpose of the Position:
The International School Librarian plays a pivotal role in providing leadership and direction in the management and development of the school library. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of library operations, ensuring the provision of resources and services that support teaching, learning, and research in a multicultural educational environment.
Professional Responsibilities:
1. Management and Development of the School Library:
- Develop and implement strategic plans for the library in alignment with the school's mission and educational goals.
- Curate and maintain a diverse collection of resources, including print and digital materials, to meet the needs of students and faculty.
- Evaluate and select appropriate library management systems and technologies to enhance access to information and streamline library operations.
- Stay abreast of emerging trends and best practices in library and information science to continuously improve library services and facilities.
2. Administration of the School Library:
- Establish and enforce library policies and procedures to ensure effective library operations and a conducive learning environment.
- Oversee the cataloging, classification, and shelving of library materials to facilitate easy access and retrieval.
- Manage library budgets and financial resources effectively, including the procurement of new materials, equipment, and services.
- Conduct regular assessments and evaluations of library programs, services, and facilities to inform decision-making and resource allocation.
3. Human Resources of the School Library:
- Recruit, train, and supervise library staff and volunteers to support daily library operations and service delivery.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that promotes professional growth and development among library personnel.
- Provide ongoing professional development opportunities and mentorship to library staff to enhance their skills and knowledge.
4. Programs and Services of the School Library:
- Develop and implement library programs and initiatives that promote literacy, inquiry-based learning, and critical thinking skills among students.
- Collaborate with teaching staff to integrate information literacy instruction and research skills into the curriculum.
- Organize and promote library events, such as author visits, book fairs, and reading challenges, to engage the school community and foster a culture of reading.
5. External Partnerships of the School Library:
- Cultivate partnerships and collaborations with external organizations, libraries, and educational institutions to expand access to resources and enhance library services.
- Represent the school library at professional conferences, workshops, and networking events to stay connected with the broader library community and exchange knowledge and expertise.
6. Teaching and Learning:
- Provide instruction and support to students in information literacy skills, research methodologies, and ethical use of information resources.
- Collaborate with teachers to design and deliver library orientation sessions, research workshops, and other instructional activities that support curriculum objectives.
- Foster a love of reading and lifelong learning through the promotion of diverse reading materials and engagement in literary activities and discussions.
- The librarian holds a minimum teaching load of fifteen(15) teaching(Literacy/English Language Support) periods a week and the librarian is required to return to work on campus one week prior to the commencement of classes during each school break.
7.Other Responsibilities:
- Carry out any other reasonable duties as directed by the headmaster/principal: Flexibility is key in the role of an International School Librarian. As part of a dynamic school community, the librarian may be called upon to assist with various tasks or projects beyond the scope of their primary responsibilities. This may include supporting school-wide events, collaborating with other departments, or assisting with administrative tasks as needed.
